Toyota Recalls 500K Trucks Over Frame Rust — Southern States Hit Hardest

Toyota Motor North America has announced a recall affecting approximately 500,000 Tacoma and Tundra trucks from model years 2005 through 2011 due to excessive frame rust that can compromise the structural integrity of the vehicle. The recall, NHTSA Campaign 26V-098, expands on previous frame-related recalls and now includes vehicles in southern states that were previously excluded from rust-related campaigns.
The issue stems from insufficient corrosion protection applied to the frames during manufacturing. While previous recalls focused on vehicles in northern salt-belt states, Toyota has now acknowledged that road treatments and coastal humidity in southern states including North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Texas have caused similar corrosion in vehicles that were not part of earlier campaigns.
Affected owners will receive a letter from Toyota with instructions to bring their vehicle to an authorized dealer for a free frame inspection. If the frame shows perforation or structural weakness, Toyota will replace the entire frame assembly at no cost — a repair that would otherwise cost $10,000 to $15,000. If the frame is corroded but still structurally sound, Toyota will apply a corrosion-resistant coating and schedule follow-up inspections.
For Tacoma and Tundra owners who have already paid out of pocket for frame-related repairs on affected model years, Toyota has established a reimbursement program. Owners must submit receipts and documentation to Toyota customer service within 180 days of the recall announcement to be eligible for full or partial reimbursement.
This recall is a reminder that even Toyota, known for reliability, is not immune to systemic manufacturing issues. If you own a 2005 to 2011 Tacoma or Tundra, check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls regardless of where you live. Frame rust is a safety issue, not a cosmetic one — a compromised frame can fail catastrophically in a collision.
